Kate Southworth lives and works as an artist and academic in Cornwall, UK. She works in collaboration with Patrick Simons as glorious ninth. They work with sound, protocol, text, images and video to make artworks and DIY installations for galleries, online and other places. Their work is disseminated through a variety of forms from text-based lists in publications such as Databrowser 04 Creating Insecurity: art and culture in the age of security; numerous online exhibitions since 2001; events at festivals such as The Port Eliot Lit Fest; gallery installations in exhibitions such as the Arts Council England funded Net:Reality touring group show. Kate trained in Fine Art at Manchester Polytechnic and in Multimedia Systems at London Guildhall University. From 2002-2007 she ran the MA in Interactive Art & Design at University College Falmouth where currently she leads the iRes Research group in Network Art. The main focus of her research and practice is on how art encounters the network without being subsumed by its logic of incorporation and aggregation. It is concerned with the emergence of protocol as a distributed medium, and the transformational potential of fragile protocol as a referent of non-rationalised relations of mutuality and co-emergence.
