RAINBOW CODE, A Light and Sound Installation in Victoria Tunnel by Adinda Van 'T KloosterRAINBOW CODE: A SITE-SPECIFIC ARTWORK IN VICTORIA TUNNEL

BY ADINDA VAN 'T KLOOSTER

This responsive sound and light installation by CRUMB doctoral researcher Adinda van ‘t Klooster is now open for viewing in the recently re-furbished Victoria Tunnel. The tunnel was used as an air raid shelter in World War 2, and was listed as a nuclear shelter in the Cold War period. The artwork fittingly focuses on the themes of war, fear and nuclear weapons.

As you enter the dark tunnel your movement activates carefully composed electronic soundscapes and seemingly poetic neon word combinations which refer to the Rainbow Code. These were a series of code words which were used by the Ministry of Supply (MoS) in the post World War II period to refer to British military research projects. For this artwork, the artist chose those code words referring to nuclear weapons & warheads and made a short soundscape to go with each colour-word combination. An underlying undertone of suspense and threat resonates throughout the tunnel.

This abstract treatment of a subject as universal as war aims to generate discussion about the current role of nuclear weapons in international warfare and simultaneously allows for the work to be experienced on a more emotive level.
